NBN Reaches New Milestone: 4 Million Active Premises

The National Broadband Network (nbn®) has achieved another significant milestone: over 4 million premises across Australia are now able to be serviced under the network.
With the implementation of mixed broadband technology expanding the nbn® towards Australia’s cities, regional and rural townships, one-third of Australians are today able to connect to the nbn® under an authorised retail provider.
At the end of February over 1.7 million premises were subscribed to an nbn® service.
Peter Ryan, the nbn®’s chief network engineering officer, remarked on the 4 million milestone in a statement in computerworld.:
“Reaching 4 million premises RFS is a great achievement and is a testament to the hard work of our people and our delivery partners. We now have the flexibility and the right technologies in place to design and build the network at the speed and scale needed to reach our end goal by 2020. With these four million premises our halfway built milestone comes into focus – we are expecting to reach this around the middle of the year.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) released a report last month that detailed the expansion of the nbn® and its broadband technology. Internet services like the Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) have made its first footprint figures during the recent ACCC report.
Last year, nbn®’s Fibre-to-the-Node service overtook its Fibre-to-the-Premise counterpart in terms of number of premises and commercial adoption of plans from authorised nbn® retail service providers.
The nbn® is expected to release its reports from the first half of the 2017 financial year.
