NBN: 2016 to be banner year for internet connectivity
February 2, 2016 3:48 am
The holidays are over and Aussie workers are getting back to the grind with fresh resolutions for the year. While these resolutions are different for every person, there is perhaps one sentiment virtually all Australians share: the need for Internet connectivity.
Chief Executive Officer of the nbn, Bill Morrow, believes 2016 to be a tipping point for connectivity in Australia, where Australians become connected both at work and at home in ways never before deemed possible.
As of today, the average Australian home has about nine connected devices downloading over 64GB of data each month. This is equivalent to over 9,000 minutes of streamed video content, some 570 podcasts, and more than 30 large-sized file transfers.
Moreover, nbn® network users are consuming an average of 122GB each month, almost twice as much as the rest of the country. It is predicted that by the time the nbn® rollout is completed in 2020, households will have thrice as many devices – making it a total of 29 devices on the average per home. Imagine what life would look like by then.
Change in the community
Entire communities from all over the country are also undergoing change as a direct result of technology and connectivity. Outside major state capitals, ‘Silicon Suburbs’ are beginning to show up, with areas like Ballarat in Victoria, Ipswich in Queensland, and Wollongong, NSW, to name a few.
These places are becoming breeding grounds of innovation that lets people build international businesses in regional towns.
The lives of small business owners, doctors, photographers, stylists, etc. are radically transformed with their access to fast broadband that lets them interact with suppliers, co-workers, and customers in a profoundly better way. Soon, this will be possible from wherever in Australia – be it in a beachside town or a countryside mountaintop.
It is the magnitude of this demand for connectivity that fuels the nbn to bring its network to every Australian home and business by 2020.
Today, the nbn footprint reaches over 1.7 million homes and business across the country, with over 700,000 already connected to the network.
What’s in store
Construction to complete the network build which will benefit millions of homes and business across 1,500 suburbs will begin this year.
Mr. Morrow said they are on track to bring nbn® broadband plans to nearly one in four homes by June of this year. By June 2018, the network is set to become available to three in four Australians.
“Our team of space engineers are also preparing to launch our second satellite in 2016, and the nbn® satellite service will go a long way towards narrowing the digital divide for those living in remote and regional areas of our country,” Mr. Morrow said.
