Practice proper placement
Identify which part of your house the most activity will take place in and that’s where your router needs to be. Usually it’s the living room area and the kitchen, so find a central spot where you can position your router about five feet or so off the ground. That way, the wireless signal will reach all the areas where it’s mostly needed.
Complete upgrades by rebooting
Any software or speed updates will not get installed without a restart. To ensure top performance, reboot your router before the dates when you expect there will be high activity in your home. To do that, you must unplug the device from the power outlet, wait for some 15 to 20 seconds, then plug it back in. Give it a few minutes before switching it back on.
Use a less crowded connection
A 5GHz connection is better than the default 2.4GHz because it is faster and less crowded. High bandwidth applications will perform better if you move to a less crowded spectrum. For wireless gateways with the two radio bands, instruct guests to change their device’s Wi-Fi settings to 5GHz for a better streaming or gaming experience.
Hold off on bandwidth-heavy tasks
On days when you will have visitors over, hit the pause button on any uploads or downloads in progress and avoid other activities that might take up speed and high bandwidth. Schedule them beforehand or just wait until after the guests have left so you don’t end up hogging the connection.
Reset when needed
Sometimes your Internet will become sluggish over the Wi-Fi connection. When this happens, perform a reset on your wireless gateway. It will give your router time to readjust and reestablish your home network – thereby solving the issue.
