Welcome to the Internet of Things

17 February 2015

The Internet of Things, or IoT, is the interconnection and communication between different devices. It refers to the ability of devices to “sense” real world aspects (e.g. temperature, space, movement, lighting, etc.) and act on it.
The phrase, believed to have been coined by Kevin Ashton at P&G in 1999, encompasses the production and consumption of Internet data by machines, the communication that takes place between them, and how this process can help improve man’s quality of life.
Some examples of basic Smart devices that make use of Internet technologies (e.g. WiFi) to communicate with one another are smartphones, laptops, and tablets, to name a few.
Now, more home and business fixtures, appliances, and even vehicles are getting in on the Internet of Things.
Check out this infographic that tells the complete story behind the Internet of Things.
