Sydney is fast becoming Australia’s leading hub of the Internet of Things (IoT) as it becomes the new home of Cisco’s innovation centre.
The Cisco Innovation Central Sydney (CICS) is a new research and development facility dedicated to developing and commercialising technologies for the IoT. It is located at ATP Innovations, in the National Innovation Centre, Australian Technology Park.
The new Sydney centre will focus on four key areas
- agriculture
- astronomy
- resources
- smart cities
To drive digital innovation, it aims towards providing a collaborative environment where academics, entrepreneurs, scientists, as well as local and global industry experts can work together on innovative concepts and technologies.
CICS is the latest of ten Cisco centres around the world. It is linked to a hub on the University of New South Wales campus in Sydney, and operates in cooperation with the Cisco Internet of Everything Innovation Centre (CIIC) at Curtin University in Perth.
Cisco has announced that it will invest US$15 million over the next five years to its Australian innovation centres as part of its commitment to generate new economic growth through technological innovations. It works in collaboration with government, academic, and industry partners, such as the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Data61, the NSW Department of Primary Industries, the University of New South Wales, the NSW Farmers Association, the National Farmers Federation, and ATP Innovations.
The Internet of Everything
Though the “Internet of Things” is the most commonly used label describing the holistic connectivity that is rapidly taking place across the world, Cisco highlights the term “Internet of Everything” (IoE) to describe its application of how connectivity brings together people, process, data, and things. Around the world, capturing and translating of data from various connected devices have been accelerating at an astonishing rate. From 200 million connected objects and devices in 2000, this number is projected to reach 50 billion across the globe by 2020.
The Importance of Innovation
During the resent CICS launch, Australian Chief Scientist Dr. Alan Finkel emphasised the importance of innovation in the modern world. “Innovation is a continuum that starts with research and invention, and continues through to translation for economic and societal benefits,” he quipped.
Late last year, the importance of innovation for Australia’s economic boost was also underlined when Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull launched the National Innovation and Science Agenda initiative of the government with federal funding of AU$1.1 billion over the next four years.
