The Internet of Things is an emerging industry looking to rework the very foundation of how information and data are processed in real time. With Australia forming the Internet of Things Alliance to chart a roadmap of the Australian IoT future, like minded groups are also starting the IoT-centric initiative.
South Australia has begun laying groundwork as the state is looking to be the first in Australia to operate on the IoT.
This initiative was formed through the Investment Attraction agency and a key partnership between Thinxtra (an Aussie tech company who specialise in the IoT) and French IoT specialists SIGFOX to allow South Australians to be able to connect a number of IoT devises to a secured network.
“It’s a contribution – we are setting up the stations at our cost, they’re providing free sites for us, I’d say it’s a 50/50 contribution,”

Having the IoT in South Australia will help the state innovation for agriculture, regional business and start raising tech hubs around the region. IoT is also seen to help boost the state’s AUD$21 billion worth of agribusiness output from agriculture, food, wine and forestry export industry.
Renald Gallis further explained the advantages of IoT enabled technology for the farming side of the state:
“You can connect very cheap sensors, with very cheap connectivity – around $2 per year with devices like a tracker.”
The IoT framework is currently being rolled out and is marked for a 2017 June completion, and will be fully operational by late 2018.
The city of Adelaide is also to benefit with the IoT hub rising in SA as the framework will boost the city’s aspiration for technological advancements.
