The technology of the future is revealing itself as platforms like virtual reality, flying drones and the Internet of Things (IoT) start to gear up from early adoption towards industrial use.
Last month, the National Broadband Network (nbn®) released the report: Gen NBN: 2020 and Beyond, detailing upcoming technologies set to be big in the future, and how the next generation of millennials will use the technology to advance today’s science and research.
According to the nbn®, the five circles of social life will be greatly impacted by technology;
- connectivity and infrastructure,
- consumption and lifestyle,
- working and living,
- health and well-being
- education and learning.
The nbn® also stated that by 2020, technologies such as virtual reality, 3D printing, drones, automation and the internet of Things will be common in homes and workplaces.

The nbn® report also stated advancements in telecommunications will benefit the healthcare industry tremendously, as telehealth (through videoconferencing and internet connected medical resources from organisations and the government) will make healthcare accessible across Australia; regardless of remote areas. Through efficiency, the healthcare industry as a whole could save up as much as $3 billion annually.
Liam Magee also stated that the nbn® is doing its share in bridging the digital divide between the cities of Australia and regional areas. Technologies from the nbn® such as Fixed wireless and satellite internet are connecting homes, businesses and organisations across regional and rural Australia.
