What is spam?

Spam is unwanted emails used for advertising, phishing or spreading harmful computer viruses.
Unfortunately there is no way to permanently stop spam, however here we list some most widely used
spam and ways that you can help reduce the amount of spam that you receive.

Activ8me will never ask for your personal information over email.

This includes:

  • Payment information (credit card number, debit card number, etc.)
  • Account usernames or passwords
  • or tax file number

The most commonly seen spam includes the following:

  • Phishing scams, a very popular and dangerous form of email fraud
  • Foreign bank scams or advance fee fraud schemes
  • Pyramid schemes, including multilevel marketing (MLM)
  • Other “Get Rich Quick” or “Make Money Fast” (MMF) schemes
  • Misleading health products and remedies

How can I identify if something may be spam?

  1. If you don’t know the sender, be cautious.
  2. If you were not expecting the Email, be cautious.
  3. If the Email contains any type of threat or reward, be cautious.

If all three of the above apply, the Email is most likely malicious

How can I reduce spam?

  1. Keep your email address private
  2. Verify the sender
  3. Keep your computer operating system and security software up to date
  4. Filter your email
  5. Don’t reply to spam
  6. Be careful releasing your email address, and know how it will be used
  7. Use a secondary email account

Can I report spam messages?

You can report spam to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) https://www.acma.gov.au/theACMA/make-a-complaint-spam-telemarketing-or-fax-marketing with their online complaints form

You can also forward it as an attachment to abuse@apn.net.au to help train our spam filter.

Can I report a Phishing message?

You can report a phishing email to our abuse team by forwarding it as an attachment to abuse@apn.net.au, this allows our security team to train the mail filter and send takedown requests to the email and website hosts that the campaign was run through.
