nbn Fibre Installation Types
nbn Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) Installation
Using optical fibre, Fibre-to-the-Premise (also called Fibre-to-the-Home) as the name suggests, involves fibre-optic cabling running all the way into your home. FTTP connections require an nbn access network device, known as a Network Termination Device (or NTD) to be installed inside your home. This device requires power to operate and can only be installed by an approved nbn installer. Luckily, if your address is eligible for nbn FTTP and not yet installed, Activ8me can arrange for standard installation free-of-charge. New Development Fees apply to select addresses – call us on 13 22 88 to check if you’re unsure.
Important: The nbn Fibre-to-the-Premise equipment is the property of nbn and should not be removed from the premises where it’s installed, even if you move.
nbn Fibre-to-the-Building (FTTB) Installation
An nbn Fibre to the Building (FTTB) connection is generally used by apartment blocks or similar types of buildings to connect to the nbn access network. In FTTB connections, a fibre-optic line runs to a fibre node in the building’s communications room. From there, existing network technology in the building (either phone cables or ethernet cables) to connect to each apartment. The fibre node is likely to take the form of a secure cabinet in your building’s communications room. Each cabinet will allow the nbn access network signal to travel over a fibre optic line, to the existing network technology present in the building.
nbn Fibre-to-the-Curb (FTTC) Installation
nbn FTTC connections involve fibre-optic cabling running close to your premises, all the way to a Distribution Point Unit (DPU), which is generally located inside a pit on the street. From here, the existing copper network (phone line) is used to connect the fibre network from the DPU to the premise. The nbn supplied, free-of-charge FTTC Network Connection Device (or NCD) requires electricity to provide the connection to the nbn broadband access network. In some cases, you may be eligible to perform self-installation of the nbn connection box. Other cases require a (free-of-charge) standard installation to be booked by an nbn approved installer. If not already installed, installation will all be arranged by Activ8me. Once you place your order, we’ll contact you to let you know the details of what’s required for connection at your address.
nbn Fibre-to-the-Node (FTTN) Installation
An nbn Fibre to the Node (FTTN) connection involves connecting internet through the existing copper phone line running into the property. Fibre-optic cables run to a nearby fibre node, from where copper cables (phone lines) are used to make the final part of the connection to the premises. The fibre nodes are normally located in green street cabinets. Each street cabinet will allow the nbn access network signal to travel over a fibre optic line from the exchange, to the cabinet, and connect with the existing copper network to reach your premises. FTTN connections do not require an nbn NTD or modem installed inside the premises. Instead however these services do require a VDSL2 compatible modem/router. Activ8me offers VDSL2+ modem/router, if you don’t already own one. Activ8me has no restriction on the use of compatible 3rd party modem-routers with any of our services, of any technology type, including FTTN.

Important: If your address is eligible for nbn Fibre-to-the-Node setup and not yet installed, Activ8me can arrange for standard installation of the ‘copper-pair’ free-of-charge by an nbn approved installer. Simply place an order online and we’ll contact you to arrange any required installation to get activated. If you’ve already had an nbn FTTN service at your address in the past, Activ8me can have a new FTTN service connected in your name to the existing line normally within 48hrs.
nbn Hybrid-Fibre Coaxial (HFC) Installation
An nbn Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) connection is used in circumstances where the existing ‘pay TV’ or cable network can be used to make the final part of the nbn access network connection. In this circumstance an HFC line will be run from the nearest available fibre node to your premises, with coaxial cable (often installed for Pay TV services, like Foxtel) running the remainder of the way into your house. HFC connections require an nbn connection box to be installed at the point where the line enters your home, and an nbn connection box inside your home. This device requires power to operate, and can be installed by an approved nbn® installer or service provider. If your address is eligible for nbn HFC and not yet installed, Activ8me can arrange for standard installation free-of-charge. New Development Fees apply to some addresses – call us on 13 22 88 to check if you’re unsure. If you already have the necessary nbn HFC equipment installed, Activ8me can have a service connected to the existing equipment normally within 48hrs.

nbn Fibre FAQ’s
What type on nbn fibre can I get at my address?
If you are unsure as to what type of Fibre Access Technology is available at your address, feel free to contact our friendly Sales Team on 13 22 88 to discuss your options. Alternatively, you can search your address here:
Why won’t my address appear on your website?
If your home isn’t listed in the nbn address-checker, our Sales Team may be able to provide assistance. Please contact 13 22 88 for direction. With new home builds, a New Development Form may be required to add your address to nbn’s directory. You can fill out this form here.
I live in a separate dwelling located at the rear of the main property. Can I access nbn Fibre in my dwelling?
In most cases, separate dwellings that share the same address as the primary residence on a block of land cannot apply for a new nbn network connection, each connection must be linked to a unique address. To connect another dwelling on the same address to the nbn network, you may need to extend your existing connection from the primary residence by either extending the signal of your Wi-Fi network or by installing an additional service through a registered cabler. If you’re in the process of applying for a new address (i.e. sub-dividing one address into two or more lots), and would like to connect it to the nbn network, then you should apply as a new development.
Can I choose what technology type to have?
When you search your address, it will appear with what Access Technology is available at your premises. If you are unhappy with the Access Technology provided, there may be options to change.
Important Information
Is there a fee for installation with nbn fibre?
nbn standard installations are Government Subsidised. However, depending on your Access Technology type there may be a $300 New Development Charge. Our friendly staff will advise you upon sign up, if this fee applies to you. You can read more about New Development Charges, here. If your property requires a non-standard installation, the nbn technician will inform you of any applicable fees before proceeding.
Getting a Wi-Fi Router
You’ll need a Wi-Fi router if you wish to create a Wireless Network in your home to connect wirelessly to the internet (for instance, with a phone or tablet). You can use the service without a router if you have a single PC or another device you wish to connect to the internet via an ethernet cable plugged directly into the nbn modem (NTD). In today’s modern smartphone age, most customers prefer the simplicity of a home Wi-Fi network for wireless internet access. Activ8me can have a router posted out to you when you place your order – it will be all configured and ready to plug-and-play. Our router prices are listed above. You may be able to use another ISP’s router with our service, you will just need to ensure it’s not network locked to your old provider. We also cannot guarantee our Support team will be able to troubleshoot issues that may arise using a third-party router – our Support team will do their best to try though!
No charges until your service is activated
Once the service is activated, we’ll then send you your first invoice.
Switch the service on and off
With the option of a no lock-in contract and no setup fees, the service is not only great for permanent residents but also perfect for owners of holiday-homes & short stay accommodation. Once the service is installed, owners or holiday-makers can connect a new service on an existing installation very quickly, just pay for one month (or as many months as needed), then disconnect. New services with already installed equipment can be up-and-running sometimes within 30mins of placing the order. Standard activation times can take up-to 48hrs.
