The Internet is bridging gaps and helping people find jobs, with the Australian agriculture industry benefiting massively from this new technology, particularly those living in the Far North.
According to Cairnspost, the Department of Employment’s Internet Vacancy Index showed that there were 51 new positions advertised online in November 2015, compared to 27 in November of 2013.
Rachel Hunter, chairwoman of Jobs Queensland, said the demand for jobs from the agricultural sector is influenced by a number of factors, including weather and trade conditions.

“In the future workers will need digital literacy as technology plays an ever-increasing role in the industry.”

In the latest labour force data, it was revealed Cairns has one of the highest participations in agriculture in the state of Queensland. In fact, last November, 5800 people had farming related positions compared to 4700 of the previous year and 3900 in 2011.
Queensland Farmer’s Federation President Stuart Armitage added that the region of Cairns experienced considerable growth in the traditionally labour-intensive horticultural industries.
He added, “In particular there has been strong growth in bananas, blueberries and avocados.”
Dennis Howe grows all three crops and more. As the Tablelands’ biggest employer, he has about 400 people on the books, ranging from fruit pickers to chemical engineers.

“We hire all the time. We’re actually looking for an agronomist, with tertiary-level agriculture, there’s a bit of a shortage at the moment, people with agronomy degrees and good practical experience. We’re also short of people who can supervise half a dozen to 10 people,”

The Internet has brought tremendous improvements to our lives, particularly by bridging gaps, building careers and helping different industries grow.
As the countryside’s Internet improves via the National Broadband Network (nbn®) with its Sky Muster® Satellite being commercially available to businesses through sky muster plans, farm owners and agriculture businesses now have access to a fast and stable Internet service, which helps them run their business — including sourcing jobs online for specialised skills.
The nbn®‘s Sky Muster satellite brings better satellite internet connectivity to regional Australia. To get onboard Sky Muster, call Activ8me today on 13 22 88 or visit our site : https://activ8me.net.au/internet/skymuster
