How to Detox Digitally When you Travel this Spring and Summer

What is your main goal when you go on vacation? If it’s to relax and unwind, then you should be off the phone and offline.
But, if you’re like most people, you’re probably still drawn to your smartphone. So, how can you detox digitally from your email, social media accounts, and your phone in general?
Here are five ways to sit back, relax, and maximise your stress-free vacation.

  1. Be prepared.

You don’t have to spend your vacation time worrying about work – not if you prepared for your leave of absence in advance. Plan ahead and set your out of office message, redirect important phone calls to a colleague, and leave a designated person (if necessary) to handle all urgent requests for you. Allow your mind to go on vacation mode by leaving everything in order at work before you go.

  1. Ditch the phone.

If you can, leave your phone entirely as you go on vacation. You might suffer from serious withdrawal symptoms, but this one is truly the simplest way to go into a digital detox. Can’t be away from your phone that long? You can do the next best thing: leave it on flight mode. This will limit functionality and ensure you aren’t glued to your inbox the whole time.

  1. Go somewhere remote.

Sometimes you really just can’t trust yourself with your smartphone. In which case, choose a vacation destination where cell phones and Wi-Fi areas are either limited, prohibited, or nonexistent. It’s a great way to guarantee you will be laying off your device for the duration of your stay.

  1. Fill up your itinerary.

Remember, the more activities you plan, the busier you will be, and the busier you are, the less time you will have to check your phone. Do research on must-try activities at the place where you’re going and book the ones you are interested in engaging in. Make time to visit museums, see tourist spots, and go sightseeing. Shop to your heart’s content and try local cuisine. Take photos and enjoy each moment, but try not to upload them straight to your IG and Facebook account and just save them for posting at a later time.

  1. Limit yourself.

In case you find it impossible to disconnect from the digital world entirely, simply set a limit on how much time you spend on social media, your inbox, and other websites. 15 minutes should do it. You will be able to get your tech fix without sacrificing precious vacation time. It’s a win-win!
