What is the National Broadband Network (NBN) interim satellite service?

The National Broadband Network (NBN) interim satellite service was launched in July 2011 to take over from the recently completed Australian Broadband Guarantee (ABG) program and is the next step in delivering high speed satellite broadband to all Australian residents not covered by the NBN Co roll out of fibre and wireless technologies. The Interim Satellite Service offers satellite broadband plans with increased download speeds of up to 6Mbps and upload speeds up to 1Mbps. The Interim Satellite Service is scheduled to run until 2015 when NBN Co plans to launch two of its own high-capacity satellites to provide a Long Term Satellite Service.

NBN Co’s Interim Satellite Service will be available to eligible individuals and small businesses (up to 20 employees) from July 2011, with the first priority being given to those who currently have no alternate access to broadband services. The second priority will be those who have a working service installed more than three years ago AND qualify for a NBN service (using NBN Co’s Broadband Service Locator). Priority two eligible customers will be connected from November 2011 onwards.

Current Activ8me satellite internet services will carry on as usual and you will have no interruptions or changes to your current service.
