The NBN Satellite service takes over from the recently completed Australian Broadband Guarantee (ABG) program and is the next step in delivering high speed broadband to all Australian residents not covered by the NBN Co roll out of fibre and wireless technologies. NBN Co’s fibre network is designed to cover 93% of Australia’s population while NBN Co’s wireless and satellite networks together are intended to serve the remaining 7% of the population.

The Interim Satellite Service is scheduled to run until 2015 when NBN Co plans to launch two of its own high-capacity satellites to provide a Long Term Satellite Service.

NBN Co’s Interim Satellite Service will be available to eligible individuals and small businesses (up to 20 employees) from July 2011, with the first priority being given to those who currently have no alternate access to broadband services.

The second priority will be those who have a working ABG service installed more than three years ago. Priority two eligible customers will be connected from 1 November 2011 onwards. Even after November, priority will still be given to ‘Priority one’ customers first.

What does this mean for existing Activ8me customers?

  • Existing Activ8me satellite broadband customers that were connected 3 or more years ago under a Government subsidy program AND qualify for a NBN service (using NBN Co’s Broadband Service Locator) may upgrade to a NBN plan after November 2011.
  • Existing Activ8me satellite broadband customers who have been connected for less than 3 years will not be eligible for the NBN Co Interim Satellite service upgrade at this stage and will have to contact NBN Co for any queries relating to eligibility. Please be assured, existing Activ8me customers who originally signed up under one of the Australian Government’s previous broadband subsidies such as ABG or HIBIS will not be affected by the release of NBN Co Interim Satellite service. Current Activ8me satellite services will carry on as usual and you will have no interruptions or changes to your current service.

You can check eligibility and register for a service through NBN Co by phoning 1800 881 816 (8.30am-5pm weekdays AEST) or online at: https://bcoms.dbcde.gov.au/NBNBSL

Please note: NBN Co’s Interim Satellite Service will be provided to a limited number of users, therefore NBN Co determines eligibility and the priority of premises to be connected, not Activ8me. If eligible, installation of equipment will be provided by and remain the property of NBN Co. Additional charges apply for non-standard installations, in such cases you will receive a quotation to accept/decline and there will be no obligation to proceed.
