  • Avast Antivirus Email Issue!

Friday, 23 December 2011

A recent compatibility issue has been found between Activ8me email accounts and Avast Antivirus.
This is causing mail clients (e.g. Outlook, Thunderbird, Incredimail.etc) to fail when sending mail.

A simple fix has been constructed below to easily resolve the issue.

Follow the below steps AFTER confirming that all security settings are disabled in the mail client and the default ports 25 for Outgoing and 110 for incoming are used. This setting can be found in “Advanced” account settings.

E.g. Outlook Express: Incoming Server set to port 110 with no SSL & Outgoing Server set to 25 with encryption set to “None”.

Open the Avast user interface:

1. Click on “Real-Time shields”
2. Select “Mail Shield” from the sub menu
3. Ensure that the Protection Status is “RUNNING”, otherwise click Start on the Right.
4. Ensure that both inbound and outbound messages are ticked.
5. Click on "Expert Setting"
6. Under “SSL accounts” make sure that activ8.net.au Host name Protocol SMTP is set to use port 25 with the Encryption set to NONE
7. Click OK and close down the Avast Screen
8. Try sending a test email.
