  • Australian Wireless Broadband Provider Activ8me Makes Security #1 Priority

Saturday, 3 September 2011

Activ8me, an Australian company that provides wireless Internet and mobile broadband to remote areas announces a new security upgrade and customer portal. WikiLeaks could learn a thing or two about Internet security from this Australian company.

Internet security hit the front pages of the world’s newspapers again this past week as the infamous WikiLeaks leaked thousands of unredacted documents. This unintentional leak included people’s names and private information. WikiLeaks confirmed on September 1, 2011 that they had lost control of hundreds of thousands of the U.S. diplomatic cables due to a security breach. The WikiLeaks fiasco reiterates the importance of Internet security vigilance by all Internet companies who hold personal data or customer information.

Activ8me is one Australian broadband provider that is putting the privacy and the security of customer’s information at the top of the priority list. They provide satellite and wireless broadband services to Australians in remote locations, and are one of the satellite providers of the Australian Government’s National Broadband Network. Activ8me connects isolated communities with the outside world in ways that were unimaginable 20 years ago.

Activ8me’s latest update improves both the usability and security of the customer portal. In addition, Activ8me has been confirmed as an icode compliant site. Icode is a voluntary security protocol that was launched in 2010 for Australian Internet Service (ISP) providers. The focus of icode is to help protect ISP networks and the private information of their customers from malicious cyber attacks and fraud.

WikiLeaks Leaking is a Wakeup Call

As WikiLeaks and governments around the world have learned, with increased access and convenience comes increased responsibility. Is the Internet safe? What is the price for access? In June 2011, Australian state governments, consumer advocacy groups, and computer industry specialists asked exactly these questions during Cybersecurity Awareness Week 2011. The focus was to educate the Australian public about safe online practices and behaviours.

As a wireless broadband provider, Activ8me is constantly updating and improving security and mobile broadband services. Their latest update is just one in a long ongoing series of improvements. Security updates are very natural for an internet service provider that has made cutting edge wireless capabilities their business. However, the recent WikiLeaks breach demonstrates that all Internet companies in possession of personal data must be equally proactive about security. Consumers also need to carefully protect their online information.

Activ8me has made it their mission to provide affordable communications to all the remote areas of Australia. Using Australian ingenuity and in some cases prop planes to get to remote locations, Activ8me is focused on providing the best and most secure network for their customers.
