NBN Satellite Welcomed To The Family
Thursday, 19 January 2012
The National Broadband Network (NBN) interim satellite solution has been running for 6 months now with customers who have never had broadband internet service before, cannot have an ADSL or wireless service or those who have had a satellite service installed for more than 3 years being eligible for an install. One family who was stuck with an unreliable wireless service were Tanya Dart, her husband Jon and their family from Muswellbrook in NSW.
Tanya had previously registered for the Governments ABG broadband subsidy program in the middle of 2011 but unfortunately due to a mix up with the mail they didn’t receive their paperwork in time and could not be installed before June 30. This may have been a blessing in disguise as it ensured that they were one of the first priority customers to be installed under the new NBN satellite interim service.
Tanya and her family are a perfect example of why the NBN is needed. “We were only able to receive an unreliable wireless broadband signal and had to choose the spot where we were using the internet very carefully, one small move and the internet would drop out and you would have to start all over again” said Tanya. Customers who lack a reliable internet connection in areas of regional Australia is exactly who the NBN Interim satellite service is for, providing a stable and faster internet connection to (often frustrated) Australians.
You don’t have to be a technical wiz to take advantage and enjoy the benefits of a reliable and reasonably fast internet connection. Tanya admits that they mainly use it for “boring stuff” such as emails, general web browsing and things like internet banking and paying bills. Her husband Jon also finds it helpful when using it for work as “he can whip around much faster and doesn’t have to wait as long for the pages to load, he loves it”. These little tasks are a whole lot easier with a good internet connection.
However, the real benefit of having a reliable service for the Dart family is the kids being able to use it for school. Tanya and Jon’s two eldest use the internet to help with homework and extra online maths lessons to further build their mathematics skills. “The internet has been brilliant for the kids and school, they could never use it for online lessons before because it was always too slow or dropped out but now they can,” Tanya says. Using the broadband internet for educational purposes is one of the best things that can be done online with many Universities now offering online courses to cater for those who are already full time employed or are in the middle of an outback station and cannot get to campus. This is one of the real benefits of faster broadband technology.
One of the other benefits of broadband technology is online shopping. What is an easy, enjoyable task for most could not be said for Tanya. She previously tried to shop online but it would either reset the connection or drop out while shopping and it couldn’t be trusted. She purchased a few bargains online and like most of us chose the U.S.A as her shopping destination of choice because of the strong Aussie dollar and cheaper prices.
So what does Tanya like most about the NBN satellite connection? Quite simply put, “It just works!”
